Pervious Concrete Pollutant Removal Performance

The Center for Watershed Protection has created a comprehensive database of pollutant removal performance for present best management practices such as; dry ponds, wet ponds, wetlands, filtering, bioretention, infiltration (pervious pavement), & open channels. This Database is in its third version and can be viewed via the following link:

The pollutant removal values for pervious pavement within this document are summarized as follows:

Total Suspended Solids (TSS) = 89%
Total Phosphorus (TP) = 65%

Soluble Phosphorus (Sol P) = 85%

Total Nitrogen (TN) = 42%

Nitrogen as Nitrate & Nitrite (NOx) = 0%

Copper (Cu) = 86%

Zinc (Zn) = 66%

Bacteria = N/A

Bathe Your Horse Safely on Pervious Concrete

Langley BC, the Horse capital of Canada. Here we are known for great horse events such as; the equestrian events at the Thunderbird Equestrian Show Park, racing at our various surrounding tracks, and of course the Cloverdale Rodeo. Horses are a big part of many lives. In fact there is even a new development in south Langley geared to this specific type of lifestyle.

As you all know, horses are also a big investment. Below is a link to an article from LSU's Biological and Agricultural Engineering department, which explains how pervious concrete can help you make sure your horse is safe when bathing. It also noted how you have better means of dealing with the wastewater from washing a horse, which usually contains pathogens, bacteria, detergents, pesticides, urine, manure and other suspended solids.

Emergency Services and Stormwater Management

Pervious concrete is recognized by the emergency services as a low impact development system that does not hinder or impede the emergency services in any way.

The article notes that pervious concrete has excellent skid resistance, which is important to make "panic" stops. Pervious concrete meets or exceeds the friction value for grooved dense concrete, and exceeds wet asphalt by a factor of 4 in wet conditions.

Pervious Concrete Can Help Slow Increase in Bay`s Nitrogen Load

This article clearly outlines the benefits of pervious concrete. It focuses on the direct benefit through reduced nitrogen levels obtained through the use of pervious concrete stormwater systems.
